“You are built not to shrink down to less but to blossom into more.”
Oprah Winfrey
Last night I got to celebrate a dear friend’s second art show at her family’s restaurant A Food Affair here in L.A.. Lisa Royère is a gorgeously bright, talented, open, perceptive, strong young woman — the kind we all wish we were at the young age of 24. She’s got that extra special something, that “glow” that attracts everyone around her to her. She’s just got it.
She shared with us last night that her latest collection, BLOOM, sprouted from a recent toxic situation (one we both endured and survived). It reminded me how important it is to be grateful for those difficult situations and people who come into our lives to teach us lessons, because as I’ve shared here, that contrast forces us to align with who we are, and stand up for that which we know is our truth. And as I looked around the room, I saw so many familiar faces of friends who were brought together because of that painful time; we’ve all come out of it so much stronger and each rediscovering our own “bloom.”
But I think a selfishly fave moment for me with her work, is as I was putting together this post, my 10-year old daughter came up behind me and saw Lisa’s artwork. I was admittedly bracing myself for an uncomfortable response from her, seeing the naked female form in all her glory. But instead, she said in awe and admiration, “Wow, who did that? They’re so pretty.”
Even without the backstory, her work is beautiful. It’s bold and strong, and for me, important in its normalization and celebration of the female body — our natural state — that which we should not be ashamed of or cower, dimming our light.
Bravo, dear Lisa, keep up the real work.
