The Modern Dollhouse for My Modern Girl

Or, let’s be honest, would it really be for me?

Lundby's Stockholm House

As I’ve looked around for gifts for my daughter (who turns 2 today!), I stumbled upon an entire mini-industry of modern miniatures — and wow, are they cool!  (Perhaps my excitement stems from the fact that you had to either go to the Victorian age or to Malibu for Barbie’s Dream House in my day.) This phenom was written up in the New York Times last April, so this may be old news to you.  But just in case you missed it, I had to spread the word.

Some of the following images will shock you with their real-lifelikeness; others will make you laugh out loud that someone actually put that much time into it; and still others will no doubt creep you out just a wee bit. Oh and there are some that seriously just look like architectural models, so much so that I tried to talk my husband into selling off his old models as “contemporary dollhouses.”

First up: Brinca Dada’s Emerson & Bennett Houses, and their line of contemporary classics furnishings:

I should point out that these houses could practically be LEED-certified, which can only mean one thing: certifiably insane architects with too much time on their hands! (I kid.)

Have you seen the dollhouse maker Lundby‘s latest creations? Their Gotland summer house and Stockholm poolhouse are just a little bit crazy and a lot cool:

(Check out their stop-motion videos if you get a chance. Whoa.)

This next one I actually really like. My Mini Modern doesn’t go overboard with it, but he’s turning his little hobby into quite literally, a little business for himself. The Mini House 1 is my favorite (top), but his Mini House 2 (bottom) is also very nice. I could see myself…ahem, I mean my daughter’s dolls…happily habitating either of these.

Two more, then I’ve done my good deed for the day: minimodernistas and Miniatures by Annina have really outdone themselves with these intricate reproductions of everything from case study day beds to Eames-esque accent tables! Even the styling of their photographs has you wondering if you’re looking at the real thing or not.

We ended up giving her a tricycle this year, but I have a feeling that something like this will be on the list next year — even if it means I’d play with it more than she ever will.  Wouldn’t you??

…xoxo

The one with the striped walls is insane!! Would move in right now. Which spark pillows are you talking to me about? The thistle ones? I have the raked sand ones (new, unused) and I love them and want to work my next living room around them but I think I am going in a brighter direction (cobalt blue). They have nude and peach and ivory in them and I loooove them for you! If you don’t have them I will do a giveaway in March and you can maybe win them! Let me know if you contacted Maryam!

I’m not gonna lie, I was really tempted to get that poolhouse at Christmas. So dumb I know, but at least I feel better knowing I’m not alone.

Elizabeth – still trying to figure out my scheme! Ahhhh! I’m now thinking neutral white/gray/black and maybe the color in the artwork? Hence my question about your “Flair” pillow (i.e. the black/white flamestitch/zig zag). Yes, Maryam is hooking me up! And I will totally enter your giveaway! Free KW pillows may be just what I need to make the decision.;o)

    Hello!
I just bought, off the shelf from a local gift shop in Los Angeles, the Brinca Dada Bennett House and it appears to have a part missing and some assembly infelicities?? I have not heard back from the company yet. I’m just curious to know if you had any problems?? Thanks in advance for any information you can send me??
