My daughter’s room
Originally I wanted to do a post on a fab vintage find for my daughter’s room, but as it evolved, I decided to go ahead and take more photos of her whole room. (They are not great photos so I apologize in advance!) But first a little background: now that she is almost two, I’ve been working to make it less of a nursery and more of her own room that reflects her personality. She is very expressive (good and bad!) and is quite the little spitfire, but has a soft spot for animals. I found some inspiration from our trip to the Honolulu Zoo where she first saw flamingos, elephants and zebras, and a touch from the tropical regency style of the very pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel*.
The room has a built-in window seat which was a great opportunity to bring in some pattern! Here’s what we have so far: seat fabric and bolsters in Celerie Kemble’s Bleeker in Absinthe, two petite tiger print pillows from Blue Door Style, yellow zig zag and smile pillows from Honey Pie Design, and the Lulu elephant pillow from Rikshaw Design.
Above the crib, I decided to add the “For Like Ever” poster print that I first like-totally-loved in Jessie Randall of Loeffler Randall’s New York apartment in Domino a few years back. I really think it adds that touch of spunk that I see in my daughter!
The crib bedding is Dwell Studio’s Gio Lemon, but as you parents out there know, only the crib sheet is left by the time they reach a few months old! I think that’s OK though because it allowed me to introduce other patterns and evolve the design. And having the light gray of Benjamin Moore’s “Silver Bells” paint as the backdrop provides a neutral canvas to do so.
Gotta love those bla bla dolls! She has three, and counting…
I realize these are horrible photos but I just had to show the mirror from Z Gallerie (not available any more, but I recently found it at Shades of Light), as I think it adds so much to the room and ties in with the seat fabric and refurbished side table (bottom pic). And I thought I’d show another view of the window seat. Using pattern and mixing color is really a joy for me as a graphic designer!
The lucite tray with the island-esque pattern is from iomoi, topped with Little Twig of course (an old and dear friend started this popular organic line, but her products really are the best)!
Many thanks to The Neo-Traditionalist for the heads up about these adorable original watercolor paintings from Dimdi! I chose the flamingos because as a child I so vividly remember what a sight it was to see such a large flock of them as you first enter the Honolulu Zoo. (Oh but I really dislike these frames — I would love something that looks like bamboo instead, maybe with a grasscloth matte, so please pass on a link if you’ve got one!)
I added the Trina Turk Pisces pillow from Willa Skye Home for a little color punch to the “reading nook,” and now we’ve arrived at the point where I was originally going to post: that yellow side table was only $20! We stumbled upon it in Old Towne Orange one day walking through a passageway to dinner. My husband stripped it and spray painted it yellow, and voila…looks like it was meant to be here all along. What luck!
Thanks for taking the tour! Now that you’ve seen it all, I wanted to add that her nursery design was the inspiration behind the Leighton pattern from my stationery line. To my pleasant surprise, it’s been our most popular pattern lately!
…xoxo
*Did you know that Frances Elkins redesigned the lower lobby and lounge in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in 1946? Also learned that the hotel bar is known to have invented the Shirley Temple. I never knew! If you want to read more about The Royal Hawaiian and see some shots of this beach beauty, check out my post on the hotel here.
Update: we attempted to get a snapshot with the little one in it, but her toddler ways told us otherwise…we will try again another day!
Love, Love, Love!
Thanks Ragan! It’s been a fun project. I’ll be happy to get these last few items checked off the list!
Erika I love that little side table! It is a great size and so functional too but best of all unique! We have the for-like-ever poster in our daughter’s room too. For baby #2’s room I bought this rug to design around:
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=083013&catId=HOME-RUGS&pushId=HOME-RUGS&popId=HOME&navAction=top&navCount=258&color=095&isProduct=true&fromCategoryPage=true&isSubcategory=true&subCategoryId=HOME-RUGS-ROUND
I need help with the rest :)
Hi Christina – love the rug, it’s very Missoni-esque! I’ll send you an email with ideas.
hi there! fabulous room! where did you get your rocker in the reading nook? i have been looking for something non-offensive in a light/neutral forEVer and have not been able to find anything. :)
Hi Sophie! It’s the Carter rocker from Room & Board. I just looked at their site and it appears that it comes in a different color/fabric now, but I know you can order their pieces in any of their fabrics. Ours is called “Doss” in the color “bone”. Happy shopping!
thank you! i’m checking it out right now…xoxo!
I adore this nursery! And I would KILL for her window-nook reading area. Lucky girl :) Also, could you tell me where you got your crib? It’s beautiful! Thanks so much.
Hi Erika! It’s the Amy Coe Westport Crib from Babies R Us, if you can believe that. I can’t find it on their site but I see that there is “limited stock” in the stores. Can’t beat the price — $248!
Thank you so much! I thought that’s what it was but the wood looks SO great in your pics so I wasn’t sure. For $248 I’ll stalk it like it’s my job! Thanks again.
Hi there–LOVE this room! Mind sharing how the crib has held up? I love the look (and price) of it, but my husband is a little concerned about the quality. Thanks!!!
Hi Amanda – no problems at all! Very happy with it. Looks a lot more expensive than it is.
I don’t even know where to start….from the mirror with the lucite tray of goodies to the window seat yellow and pink combo to the transformed table. Soooo beautifully done. Love this! Thanks for sharing! You have a new blog follower!
Hi Niki, thank you for taking the time to comment! And, yay!
JUST DARLING…first the sweet baby! WHAT a delightful room. I would never want to leave. She is a lucky little love.
Thank you for the lovely comment!
I love this crib bedding! Do you have any idea where I can still find it? It seems to be discontinued….
Hi Jenna – I can’t find it either! I’ll keep an eye out for you!
I ran across your blog and just love your style. Then, I was totally surprised to seem my pillow cover (pink zebra) in your daughters room. Very cool! The room is gorgeous and I will be back to read everything! Thanks.
Ohhhhh BEAUTIFUL!!!! Everything is perfect and love the flamingo prints too! Thanks for the introduction, Lovely! xLouise
Louise! Welcome, I saw your post yesterday…thank you SO much!!
Such a cute room! On the lucite tray, where is the flower frame and the q-tip cup from?
Hi Alicia! I think the frame was a Target buy! The q-tip cup was from Antropologie but I got it years ago. It’s actually a votive holder!
I love love this nursery! What paint color did you use, and where from? Great work!
xx
One other question! Where did you find the frame for the “For Like Ever” print? I’m about to order for my daughter, and was wondering where you found the frame. Thanks!
Jess
Hi Jess! I think the frame was from Aaron Bros., off the shelf!
Your room is my new inspiration room! I have been on a hunt for that bedding everywhere! :( But to your point…they end up with just the sheet eventually, so I may just use it as inspiration for my color palette even if I can’t find it. Can you tell me what paint color you went with and where you got the yellow chevron pillow?
I just love this room! Everything is so bright and cheery. I was wondering where you got the q-tip holder on the lucite tray? I love the design.
I was wondering where the chevron knit blanky is from. I am absolutely in love with it!
