Design seems trivial when faced with an earthquake, a tsunami AND a nuclear threat, doesn’t it?
I was composing a post about chandeliers and feeling really odd about the fact that in a sense I’m “ignoring” what’s going on in Japan. I realize this is a design and style blog, but I wanted to be sure to take a pause and mention it, especially since it’s a bit closer to my heart. I am very proud of my Japanese heritage (I am 4th generation Japanese-American, “Yonsei”) and I can say without a doubt that the Japanese people are some of the most patriotic, respectful and resourceful countrymen and women in the world. They are a resilient nation and will recover quickly!
Not to say that they don’t need the world’s help — although they may be too proud to ask (that’s the “saving face” modesty, sometimes annoying I can tell you!). It takes but a moment to donate to Red Cross. I’m sure you’ve heard by now, text RECROSS to 90999 to donate just $10.
Before I go, I wanted to include a few photos of the tsunami-ravaged city of Sendai, pre-devastation, as it seems like we’re only shown images of disaster and collapse on the news. This is no small port town, people! Sendai is one of the 15 largest cities in Japan. Thriving metropolis. “With-it” city folk. Popular surfing destination. And knowing how the Japanese are, I’m sure the dignified residents would want the world to see their city at its proudest moments. Enjoy…
Thanks for taking a moment with me to burst through the bubbles we live in!

I feel the same way. Thanks for sharing these photos. The images show just how awful the devastation truly is. :(

What a beautiful way to pay homage to your home country. I was taken aback by how gorgeous Sendi was. My heart goes out to these brave and peaceful people.
