Someone went a little crazy with the PowerPoint tools
I actually tried not to blog about this, honestly because I didn’t want this atrocity on my website! But, something needs to be said…or scolded…or screamed? You’re not the only one confused. Graphic designers around the world are equally dumbfounded – not only because of the change itself, but to this? Maybe it would make more sense for a tech company, definitely not a clothing company.
Needless to say, I’m relieved that GAP has decided to scrap it after much public outcry. But it makes me wonder why they even felt they needed one in the firstplace. It reminds me of a project I worked on many years ago for the Motion Picture Association of America. We’ve all seen the oval logo on that tell-tale green screen before each movie preview. Why did they want to change it? I didn’t get, but I wasn’t going to complain about being the one that got to change it. They eventually came to their senses as well, luckily before any public humiliation.
Lesson here is: if you ain’t broke, don’t fix it. We graphic designers work hard to create a brand for you that will endure. The point is for it to become recognizable at first glance. We realize that you may get bored of it, so may we recommend a marketing campaign or packaging redesign to mix it up, perhaps? Call a professional for help, and in the meantime, have some fun with this:
